The Wedding Feast at Cana

2nd Luminous Mystery of the Rosary

Scriptural Rosary

Three days later there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee. The mother of Jesus was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited. When they ran out of wine, since the wine provided for the wedding was all finished, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." Jesus said, "Woman, why turn to me? My hour has not come yet." His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." There were six stone water jars standing there, meant for the ablutions that are customary among the Jews: each could hold twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water", and they filled them to the brim. "Draw some out now" he told them "and take it to the steward." They did this; the steward tasted the water, and it had turned into wine. Having no idea where it came from - only the servants who had drawn the water knew - the steward called the bridegroom and said, "People generally serve the best wine first, and keep the cheaper sort till the guests have had plenty to drink; but you have kept the best wine till now."

This was the first of the signs given by Jesus: it was given at Cana in Galilee. He let his glory be seen, and his disciples believed in him. (Jn 2, 1-11)

Meditation: Jesus, all things were created through you and for you. Help us to trust you in all things, knowing that everything good will come to us through Mary your beloved Mother. The Holy Spirit spoke to you through her to tell you that the time for your mission to begin had come. Jesus, through the same Holy Spirit, may my life be a hymn of thanksgiving for all that you give to me.

Eternal Father, in your heavenly kingdom, we will receive more than we know how to desire or ask. You chose Mary to show us the way, Jesus your Son, who is the truth.
Mary, my Mother, I desire to heed your words and do whatever Jesus tells me.

Our Father ... Hail Mary (x10) ... Glory be ... O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell and lead all souls to heaven especially those who have most need of thy mercy.

Christ's self-revelation at the marriage of Cana - As we contemplate Jesus's first sign at a wedding feast, let us pray for all those with a vocation of marriage and let us pray for Our Lady's intentions for them. Let us also pray now for one married couple whom we know to be in difficulty. We ask you, Lord, to pray out your grace, healing and refreshment.

Jesus changed water into wine, the first of his signs and revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him.

Graham, from England

"I think it's really important to pray to Our Lady for many reasons. Because she is the mother of Our Lord and he entrusted us to her in a motherly way. On the very Cross he said 'Woman, behold your son' and pointed at his beloved apostle. There are many other reasons as well. Throughout the history of the Church people have asked for the intercession of our Blessed Mother and we've been told that the rosary has on occasions literally stopped wars. I think also if you look in the Gospel, whenever she is quoted as having spoken, it is always very deep and profound. Once she asks for Our Lord to help the wedding couple at Cana and what she says is so simple, she just says 'They have no more wine': she knows exactly what the couple needed because she was their mother, and so that is why I think we should pray to Our Lady."

Doug, from the United States

"One thing I like about Mary is just how she points us to Christ and, in view of that, I like reflecting on the wedding at Cana, when the servants needed more wine first they went to Mary. In that they were able to get what they needed because Mary brought them to Christ. Also Mary's words 'Do whatever he tells you' so do whatever Jesus tells us. "
