"Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Forty days after the Resurrection — according to the Book of the Acts of the Apostles — Jesus ascended into Heaven, that is He returned to the Father, by whom He had been sent into the world. In many countries this mystery is celebrated not on Thursday but today, the following Sunday. The Ascension of the Lord marks the fulfillment of salvation that started with the Incarnation. After He had instructed his disciples for the last time, Jesus was taken up into Heaven (cf Mk 16:19). He, however, “was not separated from our condition”; indeed, in his humanity, He took man with Him into the intimacy of the Father and thus revealed the final destination of our earthly pilgrimage. As He descended from Heaven for us, and for us suffered and died on the Cross, so for us He rose and ascended to God, who, therefore, is no longer far away. St Leo the Great explains that with this mystery “not only is the immortality of the soul proclaimed, but also that of the body. Today in fact, not only are we confirmed as possessors of paradise, but in Christ have also penetrated the heights of Heaven” (De Ascensione Domini, Tractatus 73, 2.4: CCL 138 A, 451.453). This is why the disciples, when they saw the Master rise from the ground and ascend upwards, they were not disheartened, as one might expect, instead, they were overcome with joy and felt compelled to proclaim Christ’s victory over death (cf Mk 16:20). And the Risen Lord worked in each of them, bestowing on each his own charism. St Paul writes further: “He gave gifts to men ... and his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers ... for building up of the body of Christ ... to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ” (Eph 4-8, 11-13).
Dear friends, the Ascension tells us that in Christ our humanity is brought to the heights of God; thus, every time we pray, earth is united to Heaven. And like incense burning, its scent is carried on high, hence when we raise our prayer to the Lord with confidence in Christ, it travels across Heaven and reaches God Himself and is heard and answered by Him. In the well-known work by St John of the Cross, The Ascent of Mount Carmel, we read that “in order to obtain the fulfilment of the petitions which we have in our hearts, there is no better way than to direct the energy of our prayer to the thing that most pleases God. For then not only will He give that which we ask of Him, which is salvation, but also that which He sees to be fitting and good for us, although we pray not for it” (Book III, ch 44, 2).
Finally let us beseech the Virgin Mary, that she may help us to contemplate the heavenly goods, which the Lord promises us, and to become ever more credible witnesses of his Resurrection, of true Life."

"Cari fratelli e sorelle! Si celebra oggi la Giornata Mondiale delle Comunicazioni Sociali, sul tema «Silenzio e Parola: cammino di evangelizzazione». Il silenzio e l’ascolto è parte integrante della comunicazione, è luogo privilegiato per l’incontro con la Parola di Dio e con i nostri fratelli e sorelle. Invito tutti a pregare affinché la comunicazione, in ogni sua forma, serva sempre ad instaurare con il prossimo un dialogo autentico, fondato sul rispetto reciproco, sull’ascolto e la condivisione.
Giovedì, 24 maggio, è giorno dedicato alla memoria liturgica della Beata Vergine Maria, Aiuto dei Cristiani, venerata con grande devozione nel Santuario di Sheshan a Shanghai: ci uniamo in preghiera con tutti i cattolici che sono in Cina, perché annuncino con umiltà e con gioia Cristo morto e risorto, siano fedeli alla sua Chiesa e al Successore di Pietro e vivano la quotidianità in modo coerente con la fede che professano. Maria, Vergine fedele, sostenga il cammino dei cattolici cinesi, renda la loro preghiera sempre più intensa e preziosa agli occhi del Signore, e faccia crescere l’affetto e la partecipazione della Chiesa universale al cammino della Chiesa che è in Cina.
Rivolgo un cordiale saluto alle migliaia di aderenti al Movimento per la Vita italiano, riuniti in Aula Paolo VI. Cari amici, il vostro Movimento si è sempre impegnato a difendere la vita umana, secondo gli insegnamenti della Chiesa. In questa linea avete annunciato una nuova iniziativa chiamata «Uno di noi», per sostenere la dignità e i diritti di ogni essere umano fin dal concepimento. Vi incoraggio e vi esorto ad essere sempre testimoni e costruttori della cultura della vita.
Je suis heureux de vous saluer chers pèlerins francophones, en particulier les jeunes de la paroisse Saint Étienne d’Ohain, en Belgique, et leurs accompagnateurs. En ce dimanche où, en Italie et dans de nombreux pays, est célébrée la solennité de l’Ascension, je vous invite à demeurer enracinés dans le Christ. Car nous ne pouvons pas l’annoncer si nous ne vivons pas pleinement de sa vie. Je prie pour tous ceux qui, en ces jours, reçoivent le Sacrement de la Confirmation : que l’Esprit-Saint les accompagne et les fortifie. Que la Vierge Marie, Mère des croyants, nous protège de son amour maternel! Bon dimanche!
I greet all the English-speaking pilgrims and visitors here today. Jesus tells us in the Gospel that he has come so that his joy may be fulfilled in us. Let us ask the Virgin Mary to obtain for us a deeper faith in her Son, so that we may live to the full the spiritual joy which he wills for us. Upon all of you I invoke God’s abundant blessings.
Ein herzliches „Grüß Gott“ sage ich den Pilgern und Besuchern deutscher Sprache. In den neun Tagen zwischen Christi Himmelfahrt und dem Pfingstfest hält die Kirche die sogenannte Pfingstnovene. Die Apostel, so berichtet die Schrift, blieben ständig im Abendmahlssaal und verharrten einmütig im Gebet. Nach ihrem Beispiel bittet die Kirche bis Pfingsten um die Herabkunft des Heiligen Geistes. In dieses große Beten der Kirche können wir uns einbinden und mit einem Heilig-Geist-Gebet oder dem Rosenkranz diese verwandelnde Kraft von oben, den Tröster Geist, erbitten, damit er unsere Freude im Glauben stärke und unsere Liebe groß werden lasse. Gott segne euch alle.

Invito a todos a perseverar junto con la Virgen María, Madre de Dios y Madre nuestra, en ferviente oración, para que la fuerza divina del Espíritu Santo haga morada en nosotros, y podamos así cumplir fielmente la voluntad del Señor, dando testimonio de su Evangelio con nuestra palabra y modo de obrar. Sobre todos invoco os dons do Espírito Santo, para serem verdadeiros discípulos de Jesus Cristo, fazendo jorrar a sua Vida no meio das respectivas famílias e comunidades, que de coração abençôo.

Wniebowstąpienie Pańskie, które dzisiaj obchodzimy, kieruje naszą myśl ku Chrystusowi, który powraca do domu Ojca, by przygotować nam miejsce i kiedyś zabrać nas do siebie (por. J 14,2-3). Niech ta prawda pomaga nam w odnajdywaniu celu i sensu naszego życia, w pełnieniu obowiązków i włączaniu się w budowanie „cywilizacji miłości”. Z serca wam błogosławię.

Cari ragazzi, lo Spirito Santo sia sempre la vostra guida, perché siate veri discepoli e testimoni di Gesù. Saluto i fedeli venuti da Montoro Superiore, Setteville di Guidonia, Brindisi e Sava; l’associazione «Amici di Edo» di Pizzighettone; i partecipanti al convegno sul Catechismo della Chiesa Cattolica e i rappresentanti del Consorzio Greenvision che collaborano con l’Ospedale «Bambino Gesù» per la prevenzione e la cura delle malattie degli occhi. Saluto le varie scolaresche, e qui oggi devo purtroppo ricordare le ragazze e i ragazzi della scuola di Brindisi, coinvolti ieri in un vile attentato. Preghiamo insieme per i feriti, tra cui alcuni gravi, e specialmente per la giovane Melissa, vittima innocente di una brutale violenza e per i suoi familiari, che sono nel dolore. Il mio affettuoso pensiero va anche alle care popolazioni dell’Emilia Romagna colpite poche ore fa da un terremoto. Sono spiritualmente vicino alle persone provate da questa calamità: imploriamo da Dio la misericordia per quanti sono morti e il sollievo nella sofferenza per i feriti.
