Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity 2003

Pope St John Paul II's words at the Angelus
Sunday, 15 June 2003 - also in French, German, Italian, Portuguese & Spanish

"Dearest Brothers and Sisters,
1. On this Sunday, which follows Pentecost, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. The Unity and Trinity of God is the first mystery of the Catholic faith. With it, we reach the end of the whole pathway of revelation, which was accomplished by Jesus: in his Incarnation, Passion, Death and Resurrection. From the summit of the "holy mountain" which is Christ, one contemplates the first and last horizon of the universe and of history: the Love of God, Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

God is not solitude, but perfect communion. From God being communion derives the vocation of the whole of humanity to form a single great family, in which the different races and cultures meet and enrich each other (cf Acts 17, 26).

2. In the light of this universal horizon of communion, every situation in which human persons or groups are forced to flee their own land to seek refuge elsewhere stands out as a serious offence against God and man. We are reminded of this by the annual World Day of Refugees, that will be celebrated next Friday 20 June, and that this year invites us to focus on the reality of young refugees.

Almost half the refugees in the world are children and young people. Many of them do not attend school, lack essential goods and live in refugee camps or even in detention centres.

The drama of refugees asks that the international community to commit itself to treating not only the symptoms, but first of all the causes of the problem: that is, to prevent conflicts by promoting justice and solidarity in every area of the human family.

3. We now turn to the Virgin Mary and contemplate her as wonderful creature of the Most Holy Trinity: "the fixed end of eternal counsel", as the great poet Dante Alighieri sings (Par XXXIII, 3). Let us ask her to help the Church, mystery of communion, to be
always a hospitable community, where every person, especially if poor or marginalized, can find acceptance and support."

After the Angelus:

A tutti vorrei ripetere l’appello già sovente rivolto in passato: "Non c’è pace senza giustizia, non c’è giustizia senza perdono".
