"1. In a few weeks the Jubilee of the Redemption will begin, with the opening of the Holy Door: a rite in which many ancient noble aspirations seem to converge, which perhaps find their best expression in those verses of Psalm 117 (118), which were sung by the Israelite pilgrims when they entered the temple in Jerusalem on the occasion of the Feast of Booths: “Open to me the gates of justice: I will enter to give thanks to the Lord. This is the door of the Lord, through it the righteous enter ” (cf Ps 118: 19-20).
But at the beginning of the Psalm there is an invitation, which then also serves as a conclusion: "Celebrate the Lord, for he is good; for his mercy is eternal "(cf Ps 118, 1; Ps 118, 29).
Justice and mercy are the inseparable synthesis of God's mysterious relationship with man, who is invited to trust in the infinite goodness of the One who created him out of love, redeemed him out of love, called him to Baptism, to love. Penance, to the Eucharist, to the Church, to eternal life. And it is also out of love that God makes us feel his call to conversion in these days, symbolized by the entrance through the Holy Door.
It is about the intimate and profound conversion ("metanoia") of those who want to adapt to the demands of divine justice with an unshakable trust in divine mercy. The Holy Year is meant to be this "favourable time" (cf 1 Cor 6: 2) of entry and conversion for those who look at the Holy Door from near or far and discover its meaning with the light of faith: justice, door of mercy, opened by the Church that announces and wants to give Christ to the world.
2. Christ is the true Door: he himself said it of himself (Jn 10, 7), as he also defined himself as the way to the Father (Jn 14, 6).
It is a door and a way of justice, because passing through him one enters the order of relationships with God that responds to the demands of God's holiness and of the very nature of man: an order of righteousness, of subordination to the divine will, of obedience to the divine law; order that is determined by the Word of God contained in the Sacred Scriptures, but which is already outlined in the depths of the free and pure conscience and is reflected in the ethical convictions of uncorrupted men, an order which in the Christian conscience is more clearly illuminated and more incisively engraved from the interior magisterium of the Holy Spirit.
Now, the sin of man upsets the order in its ethical essence, not without repercussions of a psychic, somatic, even cosmic nature, as Saint Paul intuited (cf Rom 8, 20) and as human experience attests in everyday life contact with the evils and pains of the world.
Not infrequently, today, in moments of more crude observation of the human miseries that occur at every level of personal, family and social life, alarming and alarmed voices are raised that presage the hour of catastrophe.
In the hours of greatest sincerity, many perhaps feel pass over their hearts the same melancholy considerations as St Paul on the condition of man fallen and almost unhinged by sin (cf. Rom 1:18 ff.). But with St Paul the believer knows that the order of divine justice was reassembled by Christ, who "through the work of God became for us wisdom, justice, sanctification and redemption" (1 Cor 1, 30).
The believer knows that Christ is the Door of the New Justice, because with the sacrifice of his life he has re-established the order of relations between humanity and God, overcoming sin and introducing into the world the forces of Redemption far more powerful than those of sin and death.
3. This entry into the new order of justice would not be possible if the ray of the infinite mercy of God which is by essence love, mercy, generous and helpful goodness did not extend over the whole economy of salvation. Since God loved us, “he did not spare his own Son, but gave him for all of us”, as St Paul says (Rom 8, 32) and accepted his sacrifice. Christ Crucified is the irrefutable sign of God's love for us and the definitive revelation of his mercy.
The Holy Door symbolizes thus, and above all, the Door of Mercy, which even the man of today can find in Christ.
Many people of our time perhaps need above all to feel refreshed in hope, which is based on the revelation of divine mercy. This is why I wanted to dedicate my second encyclical (1981) to this fascinating and fundamental theme of Christianity, which presents God, in the words of St Paul, precisely as Dives in Misericordia (Eph 2, 4). I wish, hope and pray that the Holy Year will be a providential occasion for a universal evangelization and catechesis of Mercy.
4. The entrance through the Door of Justice and Mercy still has the meaning of our new and more decisive conversion, which is concretized in the practice of Penance as a virtue and as a Sacrament.
Conversion is also a gift of mercy, a grace of God, a fruit of the redemption wrought by Christ, but it includes and requires an act of our will which freely, under the action of the Holy Spirit, accepts the gift, responds to love, it falls within the order of eternal law and justice, and therefore yields to the attraction of divine Mercy.
The Year 1983 will be truly holy for those who in it allow themselves to be reconciled with God (cf 2 Cor 5, 20), repenting and doing penance; for those who here in Rome or in any place, even in the most remote lands where the message of the Cross has reached, will acquire the Jubilee, and therefore will take the way of the Altar to profess their faith and invoke the heavenly Father, but also that of the Confessional, to declare themselves sinners and humbly ask God's forgiveness, thus renewing their own conscience in the Blood of Christ (cf Heb 9, 14).
In them the work of divine Mercy will thus be accomplished, which will make them sharers in the Justice of Christ, from which all our good, all our possibilities of hope and salvation derive."

K lęcząc w duchu przed Twoim umiłowanym Wizerunkiem, pragnę Ci w dniu dzisiejszym polecić i zawierzyć moją papieską posługę w krajach Ameryki Środkowej!
Podejmuję tę posługę, poczynając od dnia jutrzejszego. Biskupi polscy, zebrani na swej ostatniej Konferencji Plenarnej, zwrócili się w tej sprawie do wszystkich moich Rodaków. Oto słowa:
“Żarlivą, modlitwą, i osobistym umartwieniem w znoszeniu codziennych kłopotów i cierpień, wspierać będziemy przed Bogiem Papieża w Jego trudnej, apostolskiej pilgrzymce”.
Wyrażam moją, wdzięczność za to duchowe wsparcie.
Równocześnie wyrażam przekonanie, ze doświadczenia mojego własnego Narodu, pomogą. mi spełnić posługę Ewangelii w stosunku do tych społeczeństw, które tak bardzo są, doświadczane w obecnej godzinie dziejów.
I dlatego Tobie, Matko, zawierzam tę posługę.

Inginocchiato in spirito dinanzi alla tua amata Effigie, desidero oggi raccomandare ed affidare a te il mio ministero apostolico nei Paesi dell’America Centrale.
Incomincerò questo ministero dal giorno di domani. I Vescovi Polacchi, riuniti nella loro recente Conferenza plenaria, si sono rivolti a questo proposito a tutti i miei connazionali con queste parole: “Con un’ardente preghiera e una personale penitenza nel sopportare difficoltà e sofferenze quotidiane cercheremo di aiutare al cospetto di Dio il Papa in questo suo difficile pellegrinaggio apostolico”. Esprimo la mia gratitudine per questo aiuto spirituale.
Contemporaneamente manifesto la mia convinzione che le esperienze della mia Nazione mi aiuteranno a compiere la missione del Vangelo verso quelle popolazioni che sono tanto provate nell’attuale ora della storia.
E perciò a te, Madre, affido questo ministero. “Totus tuus”.

Ao saudar-vos o meu pensamento vai para a vossa pátria, onde amanhã, se Deus quiser, terei a alegria de passar, na minha viagem apostólica para a América Central. Em vós saúdo todos os desportistas e, desde já, os portugueses em geral. Na vossa actividade, vós sois centro da atenção das massas e admirados e aplaudidos especialmente por numerosos jovens. Poim bem: ao desejar-vos felicidades, faço votos também de que todos possam ver em vós, com o bom jogo e os resultados favoráveis, a harmonia e a novreza interiores, o exemplo da dignidade, lealdade, camaradagem e amizade, que são caminhos para a fraternidade entre os homens. E que Deus vos proteja sempre!
È presente all’udienza di oggi un numeroso gruppo di aderenti all’Associazione Italiana Stomizzati (AISTOM). Carissimi, nel rivolgervi il mio saluto cordiale, desidero esprimere vivo apprezzamento per i nobili fini che la vostra Associazione persegue. E’ importante che allo stomizzato sia offerta ogni opportunità di reinserimento, dal punto di vista sia psicologico che funzionale, nel tessuto sociale di cui deve continuare a sentirsi parte integrante. Vi esorto, a perseverare nel cammino intrapreso, mentre benedico voi ed i vostri familiari.
Un affettuoso saluto rivolgo anche al gruppo di Catechisti parrocchiali delle diocesi di Salerno, Acerra e Campagna, accompagnati all’Udienza dall’Arcivescovo Monsignor Gaetano Pollio e dal Vescovo Coadiutore, Monsignor Guerino Grimaldi. Carissimi, la visita alle tombe degli Apostoli ed ai luoghi consacrati dal sangue dei martiri valga a ravvivare nei vostri animi le certezze della fede, confermandovi nel generoso proposito di farvi annunciatori fra gli uomini di oggi di quella Parola di salvezza, nella quale intere generazioni di cristiani hanno trovato le supreme ragioni del vivere e del morire. Con la mia Apostolica Benedizione.
Saluto poi il gruppo di famiglie e alunni del liceo scientifico “Francesco della Madonna” e delle scuole elementare e media dell’Istituto San Gaetano, guidato dalle Suore Orsoline di Gandino, che ricordano in questi giorni il loro cinquantesimo di apostolato nel popoloso rione romano di Trastevere. Carissimi, sono contento di vedere unite famiglia e scuola cattolica nel commemorare l’anniversario dell’opera che le benemerite religiose, venute dalla generosa terra bergamasca, vanno svolgendo con dedizione e spirito di sacrificio. Di cuore vi imparto la mia Benedizione. Benedico altresì tutti gli studenti e le studentesse delle altre Scuole provenienti da varie città d’Italia, che sono presenti a questo incontro.
Ricorso e saluto anche gli altri giovani, auspicando che con la generosità e l’entusiasmo, che caratterizzano la loro età, sappiano mettersi, in questo periodo quaresimale, alla sequela di Gesù, con spirito di profonda conversione interiore ed altresì di fattiva carità verso i poveri e i bisognosi.
Ed a voi, fratelli e sorelle infermi, che portate nel vostro animo e nel vostro corpo “le stigmate di Gesù”, voglio dire oggi una parola di conforto e di incoraggiamento, che ci proviene dalla bocca stessa di Gesù, nel suo colloquio con i discepoli, che si recavano ad Emmaus: “Non bisognava che il Cristo sopportasse queste sofferenze per entrare nella sua gloria?”. Unite le vostre sofferenze alle sue, per il bene della Chiesa e dell’umanità, e Dio rivelerà in voi la sua gloria.
A voi, novelli sposi, che in questi giorni avete consacrato irrevocabilmente il vostro vicendevole affetto dinanzi a Dio ed alla Chiesa nel sacramento del Matrimonio, rivolgo l’augurio che la vostra nascente famiglia cristiana sia sempre una fervida ed operosa comunità di fede e di amore, nella mutua fedeltà e dedizione.
A tutti la mia Benedizione Apostolica."
