in the Jubilee of the Redemption

"1. "Raised up to the right hand of God, after having received from the Father the Holy Spirit that he had promised, he poured it out" (Acts 2, 33).
Dearest ones/friends, last Sunday was the solemnity of Pentecost. As is known, I had the joy of living this important ecclesial recurrence with the population of Milan, among whom I went so as to conclude the celebrations of the National Eucharistic Congress. It was a very rich experience, upon which I am reserving (the chance/right) to return to on another occasion.
This morning I would like to draw your attention to the fundamental significance of Pentecost in the life of the Church, which recognizes in that event her official birth and the beginning of her expansion in the world. As a result of the outpouring of the Spirit, the disciples were interiorly/inwardly transformed and began to proclaim the wonders of God. That outpouring then extended to persons/people of every race and every language, attracted in that place by the roar that had accompanied the coming of the Spirit.
When Peter illustrated the meaning of the event, which highlighted the sovereign power of the One who shortly before had been crucified at the request of the people, the listeners "had their hearts pierced". The Spirit had deeply moved the souls of those who had cried out before Pilate: "Crucify him", and had disposed/prepared them to/for conversion. At the invitation of Peter: "Repent", three thousand responded by being baptized (Acts 2, 37-41).
In front of/Faced with this marvelous harvest of conversions, we are led to recognize in the Holy Spirit the One who works in human hearts the reconciliation with Christ and with God. It is he who "pierces the hearts", to resume/take up the expression used by the Acts of the Apostles , and makes them pass from hostility towards Christ to an adhesion of faith and love to his person and his message. It is he who inspires the words of Peter, when he exhorts the listeners to repentance, and makes them produce an admirable effect.
In these first conversions is inaugurated a movement that will no longer stop with the passing of the years and centuries. At Pentecost the Holy Spirit initiates the great enterprise of the regeneration of humanity. From that day on, he continues to attract men & women to Christ, arousing in them the desire for conversion and for the remission/forgiveness of sins, and in such a way reconciling ever new human hearts with God.
2. The Holy Spirit acts, thus, as (the) interior light, which leads the sinner to recognize his own sin. As long as man closes his eyes on/to his own guilt, he cannot be converted: the Holy Spirit introduces into the soul the gaze of God into the soul, so that he illuminates the gaze of conscience and the sinner is thus freed from the prejudices that mask to his eyes the faults committed. For this reason, those who had taken part in the condemnation of Jesus by demanding his death discovered suddenly, under the action of his light, that their behaviour was inadmissible.
At the same time as he arouses repentance and confession, the Holy Spirit makes it understood that divine forgiveness is placed at the disposal of sinners, thanks to the sacrifice of Christ. Such forgiveness is accessible to all/everyone. Those who have heard Peter's speech ask: "Brothers, what must we do?" How can the sinner get out of his state? It would not be possible for him at all, if the way of forgiveness was forbidden/precluded to him! But this way is widely open: it is enough to/just follow it. The Holy Spirit develops feelings of trust in the divine love that forgives and in the efficacy of the redemption worked/operated/made by the Saviour.
Then there is another aspect of the reconciliatory action of the Spirit which cannot be passed over in silence. At/On Pentecost he inaugurates the work of the reconciliation between men/of men with one another. With his coming, in fact, the Spirit arouses an assembly/gathering of persons/people of different provenances, "pious men come from all the nations that are under heaven", it is said in the book of Acts (Acts 2, 5). He manifests in this way his intention to gather all the nations into one faith, opening their hearts to the understanding of the message of salvation.
In particular, he wants to unite the peoples, making them surmount the barrier made/built by the division of languages. The testimony of the disciples, who proclaim the wonders of God, is understood by each listener in his mother tongue (cf Acts 2, 8). The diversity of language is no longer an impediment to the unanimous welcoming/acceptance of Christ's message, because the Spirit is in charge of/responsible for making the announcement of the good news penetrate into each person/one.
Starting from/Since Pentecost, the reconciliation of all peoples is no longer a dream entrusted to a distant future. It has become a reality, destined to grow incessantly with the universal expansion of the Church. The Holy Spirit, who is the Spirit of love and unity, concretely realizes the purpose of Christ's redemptive sacrifice, the reunion of the once scattered children of God.
3. Two aspects of this unifying action can be distinguished. By making men (& women) adhere to Christ, the Holy Spirit binds them in the unity of a single body, the Church, and reconciles in such a way in a/the same friendship persons/people who are very distant from each other by geographical and cultural location. He makes the Church a perpetual center of reunion and reconciliation.
It can be said moreover that the Holy Spirit exercises, in a certain way, a reconciliatory/reconciling action even in those who remain outside the Church, by inspiring in them the desire for a greater unity of all nations and all men, and by stimulating efforts aimed at overcoming the numerous conflicts that continue to divide the world.
We like to conclude by thinking that the Holy Spirit realises this reconciliation of humanity with il concorso/the help of Mary, universal Mother of men & women/mankind. At the beginnings of the Church she, united in prayer with the apostles and the first disciples, contributed/helped to obtain an abundant outpouring of the gifts of the Spirit. Also today Mary continues to collaborate with the divine Spirit in the reunification of men (& women), because her mother's love, addressing everyone and each one/each and every one, claims unity. May the Holy Spirit be pleased to satisfy/indulge this her profound yearning/longing, rendering/making humanity ever more disposed/willing to accept her maternal invitations to brotherhood and solidarity."

"Chers Frères et Sœurs, Dimanche dernier, nous avons célébré la Pentecôte. Le Christ, élevé dans la gloire de Dieu, a reçu de son Père l’Eprit Saint. Il l’a répandu sur les Apôtres, sur les disciples; et il le répand sans cesse dans son Eglise. Les disciples furent intérieurement transformés et commencèrent à proclamer les merveilles de Dieu; et par milliers, leurs auditeurs, grâce au même Esprit, en furent remués jusqu’au fond du cœur, furent libérés de leurs préjugés, commencèrent à reconnaître leurs péchés avec le regard de Dieu, comprirent que la voie du pardon était largement ouverte. Ce fut pour eux la conversion, l’adhésion de foi et d’amour au Christ, le baptême, bref la réconciliation avec Dieu. Et en même temps fut inaugurée par l’Esprit Saint l’œuvre de réconciliation des hommes entre eux. D’abord pour réunir dans un seul Corps ceux qui adhèrent à la même foi, alors qu’ils proviennent de toutes les nations, langues et cultures. L’Eglise demeure ce centre perpétuel de réunion et de réconciliation. Mais l’Esprit est aussi un ferment d’unité, de solidarité et de fraternité pour tous les autres hommes appelés à surmonter leurs conflits. Que Marie intercède pour nous obtenir cette effusion des dons de l’Esprit Saint! Tels sont les vœux que je forme pour vous tous, pèlerins de langue française, jeunes et personnes âgées, prêtres et religieuses, laïcs - parmi lesquels je salue les Auxiliaires de l’Apostolat - tous, si divers que vous soyez, mais appelés à vivre du même Esprit. De tout cœur, je vous donne ma Bénédiction Apostolique.
Dear brothers and sisters, Last Sunday we celebrated the Feast of Pentecost, the day when the Holy Spirit was poured out in abundance upon the Church. On that first Pentecost day, the Spirit transformed the disciples, making them courageous witnesses to the death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. As they spoke boldly of the marvellous works of God, their listeners were moved by the Spirit to be converted and to seek to be reconciled with God. What began at Pentecost continues in the world today. The Spirit never ceases to touch human hearts, prompting them to conversion and reconciliation with God, and bringing about reconciliation and unity among all the peoples of the world. I want to extend a warm welcome to all the visitors and pilgrims who are present at the audience today. In this Jubilee Year of the Redemption, I pray that you and your families will be filled with the Holy Spirit and blessed in abundance with his gifts of unity and peace.
Liebe Brüder und Schwestern! In der Freude des Pfingstfestes, das wir soeben gefeiert haben, heiße ich euch zur heutigen Audienz herzlich willkommen. Das Pfingstfest ist der offizielle Geburtstag der Kirche, der Beginn des Ausbreitung der Frohen Botschaft Jesu Christi in die ganze Welt. Der Heilige Geist hat am ersten Pfingsttag die Herzen der Jünger verwandelt. Er wirkt im Innern eines jeden Menschen; er erleuchtet ihn, läßt ihn seine Sünden erkennen, vermittelt ihm Vertrauen in Gottes Liebe und Vergebung und führt ihn so auf den Weg des Heiles. Der Heilige Geist versöhnt die Menschen mit Gott, zugleich aber auch untereinander. In Jerusalem waren zugegen”fromme Männer aus jedem Volk unter dem Himmel“. Einjeder von ihnen verkündete die eine und selbe Frohe Botschaft von den Heilstätten Gottes in seiner jeweiligen Muttersprache. Der Geist Gottes vereinigt alle Menschen und Volker in der einen Kirche Jesu Christi und eint durch sie die gesamte Menschheit. Möge der göttliche Geist auch einem jeden von euch dieses Gnadengeschenk der inneren Versöhnung mit Gott und der brüderlichen Gemeinschaft mit euren Mitmenschen vermitteln. Das erbitte ich euch von Herzen mit meinem besonderen Apostolischen Segen.
Muy queridos hermanos y hermanas, El domingo pasado, solemnidad de Pentecostés, hemos celebrado con renovado gozo espiritual el aniversario del nacimiento oficial de la Iglesia y el comienzo de su misión evangelizadora en la tierra. El Espíritu dio comienzo a la regeneración de la humanidad: reconciliar al ser humano con Cristo y Dios Padre. Pedro y los Once quedaron transformados por el Espíritu y desde aquel día proclamaron las maravillas del Reino de Dios. El Espíritu actúa como una luz interior en cada; persona bautizada y nos hace comprender que el perdón divino está al alcance de todos los hombres, mediante el sacrificio de Jesucristo. Esta obra reconciliadora de la humanidad se lleva también a cabo, por medio dé la cooperación de María Santísima, Madre universal de los hombres. Que el Espíritu Santo, en el transcurso de este Año Santo, secunde este profundo deseo de la Madre de nuestro Salvador para que la humanidad esté cada vez más dispuesta a acoger sus llamadas amorosas a la fraternidad y a la solidaridad.
Con particular afecto saludo ahora a todos los peregrinos y visitantes de lengua española aquí presentes, en especial a las Madres Capitulares de la Congregación “Hijas de Jesús”, al grupo de la Archidiócesis de Madrid y a los alumnos del Colegio de los Padres Dominicos de la Coruña. Amadísimos: Como recuerdo de este encuentro espiritual en el Ano Santo de la Redención, os aliento a dejaros guiar por el Espíritu que habita en vuestros corazones. Que su presencia confortadora os dé siempre la fuerza necesaria para ser testigos fieles, en conformidad al propio carisma, de la Buena Nueva de Salvación: Os deseo una feliz permanencia en Roma!
Amados irmãos e irmãs de língua portuguesa, peregrinos do Ano Santo, Ao saudar-vos, aqui congregados no amor de Deus, derramado nos nossos corações !pelo Espírito Santo, a todos desejo a sua paz e alegria. Celebrámos no Domingo passado a solenidade de Pentecostes, evocando o nascimento oficial e início da expansão da Igreja no mundo: a festa do Espírito Santo. Hoje, o tema que proponho para reflexão de todos é a sua presença e obra contínua entre nós. É o Espírito divino, de facto, que continua a inspirar o anúncio e testemunho de Cristo e a mover interiormente os corações para se converterem e reconciliarem com Deus, fazendo com que as portas do perdão e da graça estejam abertas para todos os homens sem excepção; e também faz com que busquem e percorram os caminhos da reconciliação e da unidade na grande família humana.
Neste mês de Maio, com Nossa Senhora, Mãe universal e Mãe da unidade, aqui convosco, peço que o Espírito da verdade e do amor, o Espírito da unidade, realize as finalidades do Sacrifício redentor de Cristo, no mundo, na Igreja e nos corações de cada um de vós, ao dar-vos a Bênção Apostólica.
Preghiera alla Madonna di Jasna Gora Pani Jasnogórska! Pragnę dzisiaj polecić Twojemu macierzyńskiemu Sercu, Wspomożycielko wiernych, śp. Kardynała Stefana Wyszyńskiego, Prymasa Polski, którego Ojciec Niebieski dwa lata temu odwołał do wieczności. Było to w dniu 28 maja w samą uroczystość Wniebowstąpienia Pańskiego. Jakże wymowny dzień! Jak wiele mówi nam o tym, że data śmierci jest zarazem datą narodzin do pełnego życia w Bogu. Odszedł od nas w dzień Wniebowstąpienia Prymas Tysiąclecia - człowiek, któremu dane było służyć Ludowi Bożemu na polskiej ziemi w okresie przełomowym i trudnym. Jakże gorąco zmarły Prymas miłował Ciebie, Pani Jasnogórska i Matko Kościoła! Jak bardzo miłował Kościół Twojego Syna! Jak wiernie miłował Ojczyznę i wszystkich Polaków. Pozostawił po sobie wielkie zaiste dziedzictwo. Oby to dziedzictwo trwało w nas. Oby Kościół i Naród pozostał mocny dziedzictwem Kardynała Stefana Wyszyńskiego.
Signora di Jasna Gora! Oggi, desidero raccomandare al tuo Cuore materno, o Maria Ausiliatrice, il compianto Cardinale Stefano Wyszynski, Primate della Polonia, che il Padre celeste ha chiamato all’eternità due anni fa. Ciò è avvenuto il 28 maggio, nella solennità dell’Ascensione del Signore. Quanto eloquente è questo giorno! Esso ci dice che la data della morte è insieme la data della nascita alla pienezza della vita in Dio. Nel giorno dell’Ascensione del Signore ci ha lasciati il Primate del Millennio, l’uomo a cui fu dato di servire il Popolo di Dio nella terra polacca in un periodo critico e difficile.
Quanto calorosamente il defunto Primate ha amato te, Signora di Jasna Gora e Madre della Chiesa!
Quanto ha amato la Chiesa del tuo Figlio. Quanto fedelmente ha amato la Patria e tutti i polacchi.
Ha lasciato dietro di sé veramente una grande eredità. Che questa eredità permanga in noi. Che la Chiesa e la Nazione rimangano forti con l’eredità del Cardinale Stefano Wyszynski.
Rivolgo un particolare saluto al gruppo di sacerdoti, religiosi e laici del Movimento dei focolari, che in questi giorni tengono un Congresso internazionale su tema: “Spiritualità dell’unità e riflessione teologica”. Carissimi, vi auguro che i vostri dibattiti siano veramente proficui in vista di una testimonianza cristiana sempre più convinta ed efficace, sia nella Chiesa che nel mondo. Vi benedico di cuore insieme a tutti i membri del vostro Movimento. Saluto poi il gruppo degli Studenti stranieri partecipanti ai corsi di perfezionamento, organizzati dall’Azienda Comunale di Roma per l’Elettricità e le Acque per Dirigenti di Aziende idriche di Paesi in via di sviluppo. Ad essi e ai loro connazionali esprimo tutta la mia stima ed il mio affetto e cordialmente li benedico, mente auguro loro i migliori successi per il benessere delle loro Nazioni. Saluto inoltre i pellegrini di Chiavari, guidati dal loro Vescovo Monsignor Daniele Ferrari e dai sacerdoti della Cattedrale, con l’augurio che la Madonna dell’orto, Patrona della Città e diocesi, da essi tanto amata e venerata, ottenga loro con abbondanza le grazie dell’Anno Santo. A voi e ai vostri concittadini raccomando di essere fedeli a Maria come è nella tradizione più bella della vostra terra. Tra i gruppi parrocchiali desidero menzionare quello della Parrocchia di Roma di San Tommaso Moro, perché celebra il cinquantesimo di consacrazione della propria chiesa.
Rivolgo di cuore un saluto ai Giovani, speranza della Chiesa e di una società nuova, fondata sulla riconciliazione dei popoli. Riconciliazione degli uomini col Padre celeste, riconciliazione degli uomini tra di loro, come fratelli di una stessa famiglia. Di qui la riconciliazione fra fede e ragione; fra fede e cultura; tra Vangelo e mondo del lavoro. A voi, giovani, quanto mai sensibili ai valori della fraternità universale, la Chiesa rivolge, specialmente in questo periodo giubilare, che è anno di riconciliazione, il rinnovato appello a preparare la civiltà dell’amore, dove non ci siano più né vittime né emarginati.
Un pensiero affettuoso anche a voi, cari Ammalati che attendete una parola d’incoraggiamento, che vi valga di conforto nel sopportare il peso del dolore. Voi sottolineate, con la vostra presenza, il significato e il valore della sofferenza, valutata col criterio del cuore di Dio. Per costruire la civiltà dell’amore è necessaria, insieme con l’apporto della generosità delle forze giovanili, anche l’offerta gioiosa del sacrificio e del vostro dolore personale; perciò cari ammalati, sappiate accogliere la Croce con lo stesso spirito del Salvatore degli uomini. E’ la Croce che prepara la risurrezione.
Il mio saluto cordiale va poi anche a voi, novelli Sposi, che, proprio in quest’Anno Santo, avete avuto la gioia di legare reciprocamente le vostre esistenze. La vostra vita sia una donazione incessante di amore, tra di voi, per formare un cuore solo e, insieme, una sola cosa col Signore, che è il Dio dell’amore e della vita. Come immagine di Dio, anche voi partecipate al privilegio di essere fonte di vita e di amore. E’ la vostra missione. Con la vostra scelta consapevole avete modo di contribuire, così, a rinnovare il mondo."
Appello per la liberazione del piccolo Rocco Lupini
"Prima di terminare questo incontro, devo, ancora una volta, esprimere la mia pena per un sequestro e rivolgere un appello: un bambino di 9 anni, Rocco Lupini, è stato rapito insieme con la mamma, la Signora Fausta Rigali in lupini, in Calabria, nel paese di Malocchio. Il piccolo in questi giorni si stava preparando alla prima Comunione, prevista per Domenica prossima, 29 maggio. Facendomi interprete dell’angoscia della famiglia, chiedo ai rapitori di lasciarsi muovere a sentimenti di umana pietà e di non prolungare oltre una così atroce sofferenza. Possano mamma e figlio tornare prontamente in libertà, così che al piccolo Rocco non sia tolta la gioia dell’incontro tanto atteso con Gesù nel sacramento dell’Eucaristia.
Un invito commosso alla preghiera per le vittime delle sciagure della Valtellina e del Santuario di Montecastello in provincia di Brescia viene rivolto dal Santo Padre alle migliaia di fedeli presenti in Piazza San Pietro per il consueto appuntamento del mercoledì. Poco prima di guidare la recita del “Pater Noster” il Papa dice.
Vi invito ad elevare ora una preghiera al “Padre misericordioso e Dio di ogni consolazione” (1 Cor 1, 3), chiedendogli di dare forza e coraggio a tutti quei nostri fratelli e sorelle, che sono stati tanto provati dalla gravissima sciagura che ha colpito drammaticamente, in questi giorni, la Valtellina.
Possa la consolazione del Padre farsi sentire attraverso la fattiva solidarietà di ogni uomo di buona volontà verso i feriti, i senza tetto, i familiari e i parenti delle vittime. Preghiamo in special modo per queste ultime perché, purificate da questa prova, possano essere accolte nel gaudio dell’eterna beatitudine.
E invochiamo il premio e la pace eterna anche per le persone di Monza, che ieri sono perite nel tragico incidente dopo il pellegrinaggio al Santuario di Montecastello.
Preghiamo inoltre perché il Signore doni ai familiari delle vittime il conforto che viene dalle supreme certezze della fede."
