The laity witness to the power of the Gospel
Catechesis by Pope John Paul II on the Church

"1. According to the Second Vatican Council, in the Church, the Mystical Body of Christ, everyone shares in the dignity and mission of Christ, the eternal high priest, as we saw in the catecheses on the "common priesthood." Everyone also shares in his dignity and mission as the great prophet, which we wish to consider in today's catechesis.
We begin by rereading the text of Lumen Gentium, which states that "Christ, the great prophet, who proclaimed the kingdom of his Father both by the testimony of his life and the power of his words, continually fulfills his prophetic office until the complete manifestation of glory. He does this not only through the hierarchy who teach in his name and with his authority, but also through the laity whom he made his witnesses and to whom he gave understanding of the faith (sensus fidei) and an attractiveness in speech so that the power of the Gospel might shine forth in their daily social and family life" (LG 35; cf. CCC 904).
2. As the text points out, this charge comes from Christ himself, who made the laity his witnesses, providing them with the "understanding of the faith" and the "attractiveness in speech," with a truly ecclesial and apostolic purpose. The objective of this witness and charge is to make the Gospel of Christ shine out in the world, that is, in the various areas where the laity live and carry out their earthly tasks. The Council adds: "This evangelization, that is, this announcing of Christ by a living testimony as well as by the spoken word, takes on a specific quality and a special force in that it is carried out in the ordinary surroundings of the world" (LG 35; CCC 905). This, then, characterizes the laity's call to share in the prophetic mission of Christ, the true and faithful witness (cf. Rev 1:5). They must show that there is no opposition between following him and fulfilling the tasks that lay people must carry out in their "secular" condition, and that fidelity to the Gospel actually helps to enhance and improve earthly structures and institutions.
3. At this point, however, the nature of the laity's witness and, we could say, their "prophesying," as well as that of the whole Christian community, needs to be spelled out with the same Council. Jesus spoke of this when he said to his disciples before the ascension: "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes down on you; then you are to be my witnesses" (Acts 1:8). The Holy Spirit's intervention is needed for fulfilling the office of witness, as it is for exercising the universal priesthood. It is not only a question of a prophetic temperament linked to special "charisms" of the natural order, as they are sometimes understood in the language of modern psychology and sociology. It is rather a question of a supernatural prophesying, as foreshadowed in Joel's oracle (3:2), quoted by Peter on the day of Pentecost: "In the last days...your sons and daughters shall prophesy" (Acts 2:17). It means proclaiming, communicating and making resound in human hearts the revealed truths bringing the new life bestowed by the Holy Spirit!
4. For this reason the Council says that the lay faithful are appointed as witnesses, formed by "understanding of the faith and an attractiveness in speech" (LG 35). The Apostolic Exhortation Christifideles Laici adds that they are given the ability and responsibility "to accept the Gospel in faith and to proclaim it in word and deed, without hesitating to identify courageously and denounce evil" (CL 14). All this is possible because they receive from the Holy Spirit the grace to profess the faith and to find the most suitable way to express and communicate it to everyone.
5. Lay Christians, as "children of the promise," are also called to give witness in the world to the greatness and fruitfulness of the hope they bear in their hearts. This hope is based on the teaching and work of Jesus Christ, who died and rose for the salvation of all. Despite appearances, the world is often in anguish because of its ever new and disappointing experience of limitations, shortcomings and even the emptiness of many structures created for human happiness on earth. The witness of hope is especially necessary to direct minds in the search for the life to come, beyond the relative value of the things of this world. In this task the laity, as workers serving the Gospel through the structures of secular life, have an importance of their own. They show that Christian hope does not mean fleeing the world nor foregoing the fulfillment of earthly life, but the latter's openness to the transcendent dimension of eternal life which alone gives that life its true value.
6. Under the impulse of charity, faith and hope spread their witness throughout the living and working environment of the laity, who are called to make "the power of the Gospel...shine forth in their daily social and family life" (LG 35). The "power of the Gospel" is shown in the "continuous conversion" of one's soul to the Lord. It is shown in the struggle against the powers of evil at work in the world, working to remedy the damage caused by obscure or clearly visible powers that seek to turn people from their destiny. The "power of the Gospel" appears in everyday life when in every context or circumstance courageous Christians are not afraid to show their convictions, mindful of Jesus' words: "If a man is ashamed of me and my doctrine, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and that of his Father and his holy angels" (Lk 9:26; cf. Mk 8:38). "Whoever acknowledges me before men--the Son of Man will acknowledge him before the angels of God" (Lk 12:8). The "power of the Gospel" is shown in patiently enduring trials and giving witness to the cross of Christ.
7. The "strength of the Gospel" is not required only of priests and religious in their mission as ministers of Christ's word and grace. The laity also need it to evangelize the secular surroundings and structures where they live their daily lives. In these areas of the world their witness is even more striking and can have an unexpected impact, beginning with marriage and family life, as the Council recalls (cf. LG 35). For them and for all Christ's followers--called to be prophets of faith and hope--we ask for the power that can only be received from the Holy Spirit through fervent, assiduous prayer."

A travers vous, mes chers amis, je salue vos familles et tous ceux que vous avez laissés dans vos pays. Qu’ils sachent que le Pape demande à Dieu de les garder chaque jour dans la fidélité!

Carissimi, ricordo con gioia la festosa accoglienza riservatami in occasione della Visita pastorale nella vostra città, durante la quale ebbi l’opportunità di pregare sulla tomba del Beato Vincenzo Romano, figlio della vostra Terra. Questo zelante pastore costituisce per ciascuno un sicuro punto di riferimento, e tuttora ha da “insegnarci qualcosa di magnificamente attuale e universale” (Paolo VI, Omelia alla beatificazione del servo di Dio Vincenzo Romano, 17 novembre 1963: Insegnamenti di Paolo VI, I [1963] 333ss). Egli, infatti, visse proteso ad attuare il Regno di Dio, dedito a santificarsi e ad evangelizzare il popolo affidato alle sue cure.
Voi siete i suoi eredi spirituali: continuatene pertanto la preziosa missione opponendovi ad una cultura che, privilegiando l’avere a scapito dell’essere e creando falsi miti di successo, rischia di rendere l’uomo schiavo del consumismo e facile preda dell’egoismo edonista. Abbiate in ogni circostanza il coraggio della carità e del perdono, dell’accoglienza e della solidarietà.
Saluto poi i Membri dell’Associazione Italiana “Amici di Raoul Follereau”, manifestando loro il mio apprezzamento per l’impegno di sensibilizzazione verso il problema della lebbra nel mondo e per l’aiuto concreto offerto a quanti ancora soffrono di una malattia, che oggi può essere efficacemente curata.
Vi esorto, carissimi, a mettere in pratica nelle vostre numerose e benemerite attività il tema scelto per la Giornata Mondiale di domenica prossima, testimoniando con la vita che il primo “aiuto” da offrire al fratello nel bisogno è un “ascolto” attento delle sue reali necessità.
Il mio pensiero va ora ai Membri della Famiglia Salesiana, venuti a Roma da vari paesi del mondo per partecipare ad una settimana di spiritualità. Auspico, carissimi, che, sostenuti dalla speranza e dalla gioia derivanti dalla fede, possiate testimoniare con gioiosa franchezza la vostra adesione a Cristo ed al Vangelo.
Ai giovani, agli ammalati e agli sposi novelli
Mi rivolgo inoltre con affetto ai giovani, ai malati ed agli sposi novelli presenti. Fra i giovani vorrei ricordare, in particolare, quelli provenienti da Caravaggio. Accompagnati dal Vescovo Monsignor Giulio Nicolini, essi iniziano proprio con il pellegrinaggio alla Tomba di Pietro il loro cammino di preparazione alla missione cittadina. A voi, carissimi, e a tutti i giovani qui convenuti Cristo rivolge l’invito a divenire protagonisti della vita. Sappiate accoglierlo e trasmetterlo con fedeltà ed entusiasmo ai vostri coetanei. Accogliete quest’invito di Gesù pure voi, cari malati, offrendo il vostro contributo di preghiera e sofferenza all’edificazione della “civiltà dell’amore”. Alla realizzazione di tale civiltà dell’amore non fate mancare, cari sposi novelli, il vostro indispensabile apporto, come opportunamente viene ricordato dall’Anno della Famiglia che stiamo celebrando. A tal fine assicuro a tutti la mia preghiera e la mia Benedizione.

Signor Cardinale, Carissimi Sacerdoti, Gentili Signore e Signori!
Sono lieto di rivolgervi un cordiale benvenuto in questo breve incontro. Saluto con affetto il vostro Pastore, il venerato Cardinale Giacomo Biffi, e lo ringrazio per le amabili parole che ha voluto rivolgermi. Ringrazio tutti voi, carissimi, per il pregevole volume sul Santuario della Beata Vergine di San Luca, che avete voluto offrirmi. Nel primo viaggio pastorale in Emilia-Romagna, avvenuto il 18 aprile 1982, ho voluto iniziare la visita a Bologna proprio da quel Santuario, che dall’alto di una collina attrae a sé numerosi pellegrini e, come un faro che espande la luce della fede, illumina e protegge la Città e l’intera regione dell’Emilia-Romagna. Mi è caro, pertanto, quest’oggi formulare l’auspicio che la pubblicazione, da voi accuratamente predisposta anche nella sua veste tipografica, contribuisca a far meglio conoscere ed apprezzare un così importante luogo di culto mariano, valorizzandone il significativo ruolo nella storia e nella vita dell’intera comunità bolognese. Con questi sentimenti, imparto a tutti voi, che avete collaborato alla redazione ed alla pubblicazione del libro, una speciale benedizione apostolica, estendendola volentieri alle vostre famiglie ed alle persone care.
