Distinction of Relations in the Trinity

Catechesis by Pope John Paul II on God the Father
General Audience, Wednesday, 4 December 1985 - in Italian & Spanish

"1 "Unus Deus Trinitas ...."

The definitions of the Councils set out the results of a long period of reflection by the Fathers of the Church. The Church speaks of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as three "Persons," who subsist in the unity of the identical divine substance.

"Person" refers to a single being of rational nature, as Boethius made clear in his famous definition [1] . But the ancient Church immediately clarified that the intellectual nature in God is not multiplied with the Persons. It remains one, so that the believer can proclaim with the Quicumque Creed: "Not three Gods, but only one God."

Here the mystery deepens: three distinct Persons and only one God. How is this possible? Reason understands that there is no contradiction, because it is a trinity of Persons and a unity of divine Nature. But the difficulty remains. Each of the Persons is the same God. How can they be really distinct?

2. The reply which our reason stammers is based on the concept of "relation." The three divine persons are distinguished among themselves solely by the relations which they have with one another—precisely by the relation of the Father to the Son, of the Son to the Father; of the Father and the Son to the Spirit, of the Spirit to the Father and the Son. In God, therefore, the Father is pure Paternity, the Son is pure Sonship, and the Holy Spirit is pure "Nexus of Love" of the two, so that the personal distinctions do not divide the same and unique divine nature of the three.

The Eleventh Council of Toledo (675) made it clear with great exactitude: "For the Father is Father not with respect to himself but to the Son, and the Son is Son not to himself but in relation to the Father; and likewise the Holy Spirit is not referred to himself but is related to the Father and the Son, inasmuch as he is called the Spirit of the Father and the Son" (DS 528).

The Council of Florence (1442) could therefore state: "These three persons are one God...because the three are one substance, one essence, one nature, one divinity, one immensity, one eternity; in God everything is one and the same where there is no opposition of relation" (DS 1330).

3. The relations which distinguish the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and which really relate them to one another in their same being, possess in themselves all the richness of light and life of the divine nature, with which they are totally identified. They are "subsisting" relations, which by virtue of their vital impulse go out to meet one another in a communion in which each is completely open to the other. This loving communion is a supreme model of the sincerity and spiritual liberty which should characterize human interpersonal relations, which are always so far removed from this transcendent model.

In this regard the Second Vatican Council observed: "The Lord Jesus, when he prayed to the Father, 'that all may be one...as we are one' (Jn 17:21-22) opened up vistas closed to human reason, for he implied a certain likeness between the union of the divine Persons, and the unity of God's sons in truth and charity. This likeness reveals that man, who is the only creature on earth which God willed for itself, cannot fully find himself except through a sincere gift of himself" (GS 24).

4. The most perfect unity of the three Persons is the transcendent summit which illuminates every form of authentic communion between us human beings. It is right that our thoughts should frequently return to the contemplation of this mystery to which the Gospel so often refers. Suffice it to recall Jesus' words: "I and the Father are one" (Jn 10:30); and again: "Believe at least the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father" (Jn 10:38). We read in another context: "The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. The Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me" (Jn 14:10-11).

The ancient ecclesiastical writers frequently treat of this reciprocal compenetration of the divine Persons. The Greeks define it as perichoresis, the West (especially from the eleventh century) as circumincessio (reciprocal compenetration) or circuminsessio (mutual indwelling). The Council of Florence expressed this trinitarian truth in the following words: "Through this unity...the Father is completely in the Son and completely in the Holy Spirit; the Son is completely in the Father and completely in the Holy Spirit; the Holy Spirit is completely in the Father and completely in the Son" (DS 1331). The three distinct divine Persons, even though reciprocal relations, are the same Being, the same Life, the same God.

Our little mind is lost before this dazzling mystery of communion. The acclamation of the liturgy comes spontaneously to our lips:
"Gloria Tibi Trinitas, aequalis, una Deitas et ante omnia saecula, et nunc et in perpetuum."
"Glory to you, Holy Trinity, equal in Persons, one God, before all ages, now and forever" (First Vespers of the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, first Antiphon).
