Scientists and God

Catechesis by Pope John Paul II on God the Father

"1. A widespread opinion exists that scientists are generally agnostics and that science leads one away from God. Is there any truth to this opinion?

The extraordinary advances of science, particularly over the last two centuries, have sometimes led to the belief that by itself it is capable of answering all our questions and of resolving all our problems. Some have concluded that by now there is no longer any need for God. For them, faith in science has supplanted faith in God.

It has been said that one must choose between faith and science—either one embraces one or believes in the other. Whoever proceeds with a commitment to scientific research no longer has need of God; vice versa, whoever wishes to believe in God cannot be a serious scientist, because between science and faith an irremediable conflict exists.

2. The Second Vatican Council expressed a very different conviction. The Constitution Gaudium et Spes affirms: "If methodical investigation within every branch of learning is carried out in accord with moral norms, it never truly conflicts with faith. For earthly matters and the concerns of the faith derive from the same God. Indeed whoever labors to penetrate the secrets of reality with a humble and steady mind, even though he is unaware of the fact, is nevertheless being led by the hand of God, who holds all things in existence, and gives them their identity" (GS 36).

There have always been, and still are today, scientists who in the context of their human scientific experience have positively and beneficially believed in God. Fifty years ago a survey was made of 398 of the most illustrious scientists in the world, in which only 16 declared themselves unbelievers, 15 agnostics and 367 believers [1] .

3. It is even more interesting and profitable to become aware of the reasons for which many scientists, past and present, see rigorously conducted scientific research as not only compatible, but even happily capable of integration with the sincere and joyous recognition of the existence of God.

From the considerations which often accompany their scientific endeavors in the manner of a spiritual diary, it is easy to see the intersection of two elements. The first is the way in which research itself, be it great or small, carried out with extreme rigor, always leaves an opening for further questions in an endless process which reveals in reality an immensity, a harmony, and a finality which cannot be explained in terms of causality or through scientific resources alone. To this is added the irrepressible question of meaning, of higher rationality—indeed, of something or of Someone capable of satisfying interior needs—which refined scientific progress itself, far from suppressing, intensifies.

4. It is true that the step to religious affirmation is not achieved per se by virtue of the experimental scientific method. It is rather by virtue of elementary philosophical principles such as causality, finality and sufficient reason, which a scientist, as a man, finds himself exercising in his daily contact with life and with the reality he studies. Indeed, the scientist's condition as a sentinel in the modern world, as one who is the first to glimpse the enormous complexity together with the marvelous harmony of reality, makes him a privileged witness of the plausibility of religion. The scientist can show how the admission of transcendence, far from harming the autonomy and the ends of research, rather stimulates it to continually surpass itself in an experience of self-transcendence which reveals the human mystery.

If we consider that today the broadened horizons of research, especially in what concerns the very origins of life, pose troubling questions regarding the right use of scientific conquests, we are not surprised by the increasingly frequent request on the part of scientists for sure moral criteria capable of freeing man from arbitrary willfulness. And who if not God is able to establish a moral order in which the dignity of every person is firmly cared for and promoted?

Certainly the Christian religion cannot consider certain professions of atheism or agnosticism in the name of science as rational. But it is equally firm in not accepting affirmations regarding God which arise from tendencies that are not rigorously attentive to rational processes.

5. At this point it would be very beautiful to make heard in some way the reasons for which many scientists positively affirm the existence of God, and to see by what personal relationship with God, with man, and with the great problems and supreme values of life they are sustained. How often silence, meditation, creative imagination, serene detachment from material things, the social significance of discovery, and purity of heart are factors which open to them a world of meaning which cannot be disregarded by anyone who proceeds with equal faithfulness and love toward the truth.

May a reference to an Italian scientist, Enrico Medi, a few years deceased, be sufficient. At the International Catechetical Congress of Rome in 1971 he affirmed: "When I tell a young person: Look, there is a new star, a galaxy, a neutron star 100 million light-years away, yet the protons, electrons, neutrons and mesons which are found there are identical with those which are found in this microphone.... Identity excludes probability. That which is identical is not probable.... Therefore there is a cause, outside of space, outside of time, the master of being, which made being to be in this way. And this is God....

"The being - I am speaking scientifically - which has caused things to be identical at a distance of billions of light-years, exists. And the number of identical particles in the universe is 10 raised to the 85th power.... Do we wish then to take in the song of the galaxies? If I were Francis of Assisi I would say: O galaxies of the immense heavens, give praise to my Lord, for he is omnipotent and good. O atoms, O protons, O electrons, O bird-songs, O blowing of the leaves and of the air, in the hands of man as a prayer, sing out the hymn which returns to God!" [2] .

Oggi, nel pieno dell’estate e delle vostre vacanze, desidero esortarvi ad approfittare del tempo libero dallo studio o da altre occupazioni per dedicarvi alla lettura di buoni libri, che aumentino e approfondiscano la vostra cultura letteraria e religiosa. Sia vostro impegno utilizzare saggiamente un periodo così bello e così prezioso dell’anno! Fate in modo di renderlo valido e fecondo per la vostra vita spirituale a contatto con i grandi artisti e scrittori che vi aiutino a pensare rettamente, a credere, a sperare, ad amare! Questo ho voluto dirvi, augurando insieme liete vacanze nel Signore!

Cari ammalati! Anche a voi porgo il mio saluto, particolarmente cordiale! Sensibile alle vostre sofferenze e partecipe delle vostre speranze, assicuro a tutti il costante ricordo nella preghiera, mentre vi esorto anche alla confidenza e alla pazienza. Raccomando pure alle vostre orazioni e al vostro spirito di immolazione tutte le necessità del mondo, specialmente la pace delle nazioni e il buon governo dei popoli: pregate con fervore, affinché si veda aumentare il senso morale, insegnato e voluto da Cristo, unico vero fondamento della concordia e del benessere. Vi accompagni sempre la mia benedizione.

Cari sposi novelli!

Con grande gioia vi saluto e vi ringrazio per la vostra presenza! Iniziando la vostra nuova vita avete voluto venire a pregare sulla tomba di san Pietro: il vostro gesto di fedeltà e di devozione vi sia propizio per sempre e vi mantenga nel fervore della fede e dell’amore cristiano. Vi auguro di cuore di essere dappertutto convinti testimoni di Cristo, specie nelle difficoltà, sicuri che il bene compiuto porta certamente i suoi frutti. La Madonna del Carmelo, che ieri abbiamo ricordato, protegga la vostra casa, la vostra vita, i vostri propositi!. In lei confidate sempre con amore filiale! Con grande affetto vi benedico!

Un accorato appello alla liberazione del Padre Rudy Romano, rapito la settimana scorsa nelle Filippine, del Gesuita Padre Teodoro Rebelo e delle due religiose portoghesi, Suor Laurinda Moreira Leão Dias e Maria Alice da Cruz Miranda, tutti e tre sequestrati in Mozambico, è rivolto dal Santo Padre al termine dell’udienza generale in Piazza San Pietro. Queste le parole pronunciate dal Santo Padre.

Notizie provenienti dal mondo missionario rattristano l’animo e invitano alla preghiera.

Giovedì scorso, in una frazione della città di Cebù, nelle Filippine, il padre Rudy Romano, religioso redentorista, è stato sequestrato da un gruppo di uomini armati. Ogni ricerca organizzata dalle competenti autorità non ha avuto sinora il risultato sperato.

Il giorno seguente, in Mozambico, nel distretto di Ulongwe, sono stati rapiti il padre Teodoro Rebelo della Compagnia di Gesù e due religiose dorotee, suor Laurinda Moreira Leão Dias e suor Maria Alice da Cruz Miranda, di nazionalità portoghese.

Desidero far giungere alle comunità religiose a cui appartengono i loro familiari il mio ricordo affettuoso in questo momento di prova e di intima sofferenza.

Vi invito poi alla preghiera con me perché il Signore Gesù, supremo pastore del gregge, muova i cuori dei responsabili di così gravi azioni a far sì che le due religiose e i due sacerdoti siano restituiti quanto prima al loro servizio pastorale.

“Il popolo libanese invoca di essere aiutato a liberarsi dalla catena di violenze, di vendette e di opposizioni tra bande armate”. “Tutti implorano che si ponga fine alla guerra e chiedono che gli altri cristiani e gli altri musulmani dei diversi Paesi del Mediterraneo e del mondo si sentano solidali e corresponsabili dell’esistenza e del futuro di tante persone”. È l’accorato appello che, giunto dal Libano tramite il Cardinale Roger Etchegaray appena rientrato dalla missione affidatagli dal Papa nel Paese, è riproposto da Giovanni Paolo II al termine dell’udienza generale. Parlando della missione compiuta dal Cardinale Presidente della Pontificia Commissione “Iustitia et Pax” e del Pontificio Consiglio “Cor Unum” in Libano il Santo Padre pronuncia le seguenti parole.

Da qualche giorno è ritornato a Roma il cardinale Roger Etechegaray, presidente della Pontificia commissione “Iustitia et Pax” e del Pontificio consiglio “Cor Unum”, al quale avevo affidato una missione speciale in Libano.

Egli è stato a Beirut e nel sud del Paese, dove ha visitato le popolazioni della cittadinanza di Jezzine e di numerosi villaggi della regione. Ha incontrato il patriarca maronita e il presidente della Repubblica, numerose personalità politiche e religiose, e, soprattutto, ha ascoltato e confortato tanta gente: uomini, donne e bambini, tanti bambini impauriti, appartenenti alle comunità cristiane e a quelle musulmane.

Ovunque si è recato, il cardinale ha potuto cogliere tra i cristiani e non cristiani un profondo sentimento che mi ha riferito con commozione: un vivo, appassionato desiderio di pace con la volontà di continuare a vivere insieme tra appartenenti alle diverse fedi religiose.

Egli ha raccolto le aspirazioni di tante famiglie che desiderano ritornare nel villaggi di origine, abbandonati a causa della guerra perdendo case, beni e terreni che da generazioni lavoravano in pace. Intere regioni, vicine al territorio di Jezzine, sono state sconvolte dalle lotte, là dove per tradizione cristiani e non cristiani vivevano insieme. Nei soli mesi di marzo e aprile scorsi ad est di Saida e nell’Iklim-Kharroub sono stati devastati più di 60 villaggi cristiani, oltre 2000 sono le case rase al suolo, 87 le chiese e i santuari profanati, bruciati o demoliti.

Tutti implorano che si ponga fine a una tale situazione, e chiedono che gli altri cristiani e gli altri musulmani dei diversi Paesi del Mediterraneo e del mondo si sentano solidali e corresponsabili dell’esistenza e del futuro di tante persone. Il popolo libanese invoca di essere aiutato a liberarsi dalla catena di violenze, di vendette e di opposizioni tra bande armate. Invoca la solidarietà dei popoli perché il Libano possa sopravvivere e dedicarsi alla propria ricostruzione.

Faccio mie queste invocazioni e queste speranze e vi invito a pregare con me: il Signore voglia illuminare il cuore di tutti coloro che possono offrire il loro sostegno e il loro contributo di pace per un Paese e per delle popolazioni così provati.</sub>
