The Faith Rooted in the Word of God

Catechesis by Pope John Paul II on God the Father
General Audience, Wednesday, 19 June 1985 - in Italian & Spanish

"We take up again our discourse on the faith. According to the doctrine contained in the Constitution Dei Verbum, the Christian faith is the conscious and free response of man to God's self-revelation which reached its fullness in Jesus Christ. By means of what St. Paul calls "the obedience of faith" (cf. Rom 16:26; 1:5; 2 Cor 10:5-6), the whole of man abandons himself to God, accepting as true what is contained in the word of divine revelation. The faith is the work of grace which acts on the intelligence and will, and at the same time, it is a conscious and free act of the human subject.

Faith, a gift of God to man, is also a theological virtue. At the same time, it is a stable disposition of the mind, that is, a habit or a lasting interior attitude. It requires that the believer cultivate it continually, by cooperating actively and consciously with the grace that God offers.

2. Since the faith has its source in divine revelation, an essential aspect of collaboration with the grace of faith is provided by the constant and as far as possible systematic contact with Sacred Scripture, which transmits God's revealed truth to us in its most genuine form. This finds many expressions in the life of the Church, as we read also in the Constitution Dei Verbum.

"All the preaching of the Church must be nourished and regulated by Sacred Scripture. For in the sacred books, the Father who is in heaven meets his children with great love and speaks with them; and the force and power in the word of God is so great that it stands as the support and energy of the Church, the strength of faith for her sons, the food of the soul, the pure and everlasting source of spiritual life. Consequently these words are perfectly applicable to Sacred Scripture: 'For the word of God is living and active' (Heb 4:12) and 'it has power to build you up and give you your heritage among all those who are sanctified' (Acts 20:32; see 1 Thess 2:13)" (DV 21).

3. This is why the Constitution Dei Verbum, in referring to the teaching of the Fathers of the Church, does not hesitate to place together the "two tables," that is, the table of the Word of God and that of the Body of the Lord. It notes that the Church never ceases "particularly in the Sacred Liturgy, to partake of the Bread of Life" from both tables "and to offer it to the faithful" (cf. DV 21). The Church has always considered and continues to consider Sacred Scripture, together with sacred Tradition, "as the supreme rule of her faith" (DV 21) and as such she offers it to the faithful for their daily life.

4. From this flow some practical suggestions which have a great importance for consolidating the faith in the word of the living God. In a particular way they apply to bishops, "depositories of the apostolic doctrine" (St. Irenaeus, Adv. Haer. IV, 32, 1; PG 1071), "who have been placed by the Holy Spirit to feed the Church of God" (cf. Acts 20:28). But they apply respectively also to all the other members of the People of God: priests, especially parish priests, deacons, religious, the laity and families.

First of all "easy access to Sacred Scripture should be provided for all the Christian faithful" (DV 22). Here the question arises of the translation of the sacred books. "The Church from the very beginning accepted as her own that very ancient Greek translation of the Old Testament which is called the Septuagint; and she has always given a place of honor to other Eastern translations and Latin ones" (DV 22). The Church also works incessantly so that "suitable and correct translations are made into various languages, especially from the original texts of the sacred books" (DV 22).

The Church is not opposed to the initiative of translations made "in cooperation with the separated brethren" (DV 22)—the so-called ecumenical translations. With the opportune permission of the Church, Catholics can also use them.

5. The subsequent task is connected with the correct understanding of the Word of divine revelation: intellectus fidei (the understanding of the faith) which culminates in theology. To this end the Council recommends "the study of the Holy Fathers of both East and West and of sacred liturgies" (DV 23), and attributes great importance to the work of exegetes and of theologians, always in close relationship with Sacred Scripture: "Sacred theology rests on the written word of God, together with sacred Tradition, as its primary and perpetual foundation. By scrutinizing in the light of faith all truth stored up in the mystery of Christ, theology is most powerfully strengthened and constantly rejuvenated by that word. For the Sacred Scriptures contain the word of God and since they are inspired, really are the word of God; and so the study of the sacred page is, as it were, the soul of sacred theology" (DV 24).

The Council addresses an appeal to exegetes and to all theologians to offer the nourishment of the Scriptures for the people of God, to enlighten their minds, strengthen their wills, and set men's hearts on fire with the love of God" (DV 23). In conformity with what was already said before on the rules of the transmission of revelation, exegetes and theologians should carry out their task "under the watchful care of the sacred Magisterium" (DV 23) and at the same time, with the use of the opportune helps and scientific methods (cf. DV 23).

6. The vast and manifold ministry of the word in the Church then opens up: "pastoral preaching, catechetics and all Christian instruction," (particularly liturgical homiletics)...all this ministry "is nourished by the word of Scripture" (cf. DV 24).

Therefore all those who exercise the ministry of the word are encouraged to "share the abundant wealth of the divine word with the faithful committed to them" (DV 25). For this purpose, reading, study and meditation-prayer are indispensable so that one does not become "an empty preacher of the Word of God to others, not being a bearer of the word in his own heart" (St. Augustine, Sermon 179, 1: PL 3, 966).

7. The council addresses a similar exhortation to all the faithful, referring to the words of St. Jerome: "Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ" (St. Jerome, Comm. in Is., Prol. PL 24, 17). To everyone, therefore, the Council recommends not only reading but also prayer which should accompany the reading of Sacred Scripture, that: "through the reading and study of the sacred books...the treasure of revelation, entrusted to the Church, may more and more fill the hearts of men" (DV 26). Such "filling of the heart" goes step by step with the consolidation of our Christian "credo" in the word of the living God."

* * *

Saluto inoltre i sacerdoti della diocesi di Cremona che celebrano il loro 40° anniversario di ordinazione sacerdotale, e sono qui guidati da S.E. Monsignor Tagliaferri, loro coetaneo, e per alcuni anni già loro vescovo.

Vi invito a tener sempre vivo nella memoria il giorno della vostra ordinazione e di prodigarvi con instancabile zelo nell’annuncio del Vangelo e nell’impegno per la salvezza delle anime.

* * *
