The Assumption of Mary, a truth of faith

Catechesis with Saint John Paul II
General Audience, Wednesday 2 July 1997 - in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese & Spanish

"1. In the wake of Munificentissimus Deus, the Bull of my venerable predecessor Pius XII, the Second Vatican Council affirmed that the Immaculate Virgin when "the course of her earthly life ended, was assumed soul and body into heavenly glory" (Lumen gentium, 59).

The Council Fathers wanted to reaffirm that Mary, different to other Christians who die in God’s grace, was assumed into the glory of Heaven with her body as well. It is an age-old belief expressed too in a long iconographical tradition, which represents Mary "entering" with her body into heaven.

The dogma of the Assumption affirms that Mary's body was glorified after death. In fact, while for other men the resurrection of the body will happen at the end of the world, for Mary the glorification of her body was anticipated by a singular privilege.

2. On 1 November 1950, in defining the dogma of the Assumption, Pius XII avoided using the term "resurrection" and taking a position on the question of the Virgin’s death as a truth of faith. The Bull Munificentissimus Deus limits itself to affirming the elevation of Mary’s body to celestial glory, declaring this truth a "divinely revealed dogma".

How can we not see that the Assumption of the Virgin has always been part of the faith of the Christian people who, by affirming Mary’s entrance into heavenly glory, have intended to proclaim the glorification of her body?

The first trace of belief in the
Virgin's Assumption is present in the apocryphal accounts, entitled 'Transitus Mariae', whose original nucleus dates from II - III centuries. These are popular and sometimes romanticized representations, which in this case however incorporate an intuition of the faith of God's People.

Subsequently, a long reflection was developed about Mary’s destiny in the afterlife. This, little by little, led believers to faith in the glorious elevation of the Mother of Jesus, in soul and body, and to the institution in the East of the liturgical feasts of the Dormition and the Assumption of Mary.

Faith in the glorious destiny of the soul and body of the Mother of the Lord, after her death, spread from the East to the West with great rapidity and, since XIV century, has been generalised. In our century, at the vigil of the definition of the dogma, it constituted a truth almost universally accepted and professed by the Christian community in every corner of the world.

3. So it was that in May 1946 with the encyclical Deiparae Virginis Mariae Pius XII initiated a broad consultation, questioning the Bishops and, through them, the clergy and the people of God, about the possibility and opportunity of defining the bodily assumption of Mary as a dogma of faith. The feedback was widely positive: only six responses out of 1181 showed any reservations about the revealed character of this truth.

Citing this data, the Bull Munificentissimus Deus affirms: "The universal consensus of the Church's ordinary Magisterium provides a certain and solid argument to prove that the bodily Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven ... is a truth revealed by God, and should thus be firmly and faithfully believed by all the children of the Church" (AAS 42 [1950], 757).

The definition of the dogma, in the wake of the universal faith of the people of God, definitively excludes every doubt and postulates the express adherence of all Christians.

After having underlined the Church’s actual faith in the Assumption, the Bull recalls the scriptural basis for this truth.

The New Testament, while not explictly affirming the Assumption of Mary, offers a foundation because it strongly emphasizes the perfect union of the Holy Virgin with the destiny of Jesus. This union, which is manifested from the prodigious conception of the Saviour, with the participation of the Mother in the mission of the Son and, above all, in her association with his redemptive sacrifice, cannot fail to demand a continuation after death. Perfectly united to the life and salvific work of Jesus, Mary shares in his heavenly destiny in soul and body.

4. The aforementioned Bull Munificentissimus Deus, by making reference to the participation of the woman of the Proto-gospel in the struggle against the serpent and by recognizing in Mary the New Eve, presents the Assumption as the consequence of Mary’s union with Christ’s redeeming work. In this regard it affirms: "Consequently, just as the glorious Resurrection of Christ was an essential part and the ultimate trophy of this victory, thus it was necessary that the combat undergone by the Holy Virgin, united to her Son, should end with the glorification of her virginal body" (AAS 42 [1950], 768).

The Assumption is therefore the culmination of the struggle which engaged the generous love of Mary in the redemption of humanity and is the fruit of her unique participation in the victory of the Cross."

After his Catechesis, Pope St John Paul II greeted the pilgrims at the General Audience in numerous languages:

I extend a warm welcome to the pilgrims from the Archdiocese of Melbourne in Australia and from the Archdiocese of Nairobi in Kenya who have accompanied their new Archbishops for the reception of the Pallium. I also thank the choirs for their praise of God in song, especially the Choir of Lincoln College, Oxford, and the Cathedral Choir of Saint Louis, Missouri. Upon all the English-speaking visitors, especially the pilgrims from Scotland, Ireland, South Africa, Indonesia, Japan and the United States, I cordially invoke the joy and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ.
