Mary, pilgrim in faith, Star of the third millennium
Catechesis by Pope John Paul II on the History of Salvation
General Audience, Wednesday 21 March 2001 - in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese & Spanish
"1. The page/passage from Luke, which we have just listened to, presents Mary to us as pilgrim of love. But Elizabeth draws attention to her faith and pronounces the first beatitude of the Gospels in her regard: "Blessed is she who believed". This expression is "as if/almost a key which opens/unlocks for us the intimate/innermost reality of Mary" (Redemptoris Mater, 19). Crowning/To crown the catecheses of the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000, we would thus like to present the Mother of the Lord as pilgrim in faith. As daughter of Zion, she places herself in the footsteps of Abraham, the one who through/by faith had obeyed, "leaving for a place which he was to receive as an inheritance; and he left without knowing where he was going" (Heb 11, 8).
This symbol of the pilgrimage in faith illuminates the interior story/history of Mary, the believer par excellence, as the Second Vatican Council has already suggested: "The Blessed Virgin advanced on the pilgrimage of faith and faithfully kept/preserved her union with the/her Son all the way to/unto the cross" (Lumen gentium, 58). The Annunciation "is the point of departure for Mary's journey towards God" (Redemptoris Mater, 14): a journey of faith which knows the omen/prediction of the sword which would pierce the/her soul (cf Lk 2, 35), passes through the tortuous/winding roads of exile in Egypt and of interior/inner darkness, when Mary "does not understand" the attitude of the 12-year-old Jesus in the temple and yet keeps "all these things in her heart" (Lk 2, 51).
2. The hidden life of Jesus also flows in the penumbra/semi-darkness, during which Mary must have heard Elizabeth's beatitude resound within her through a true and proper/real "fatigue of the heart" (RM, 17).
Certainly, bursts/glimpses of light were not lacking in Mary's life, as at the wedding (feast) at Cana, where - despite the/his apparent detachment - Christ welcomes the prayer of the/his Mother and accomplishes the first sign of revelation, arousing/inspiring the faith of/in the/his disciples (cf Jn 2, 1-12).
In the same counterpoint of light and shadow, of revelation and mystery lie the two beatitudes reported by Luke: the one addressed to the Mother of Christ by a woman in the crowd, and the one addressed by Jesus to "those who hear the Word of God and keep/observe it" (Lk 11, 28).
The summit of this earthly pilgrimage in/of faith is Golgotha where Mary intimately lives the paschal mystery of the Son: she dies in a certain sense as mother in the death of the Son and is opened/opens herself to the "resurrection" with a new motherhood towards the Church (cf Jn 19: 25-27). There, on Calvary, Mary experiences the night of faith, similar to that of Abraham on Mount Moriah, and after the illumination of Pentecost she continues to pilgrim in faith until the Assumption, when the Son welcomes her into the eternal beatitude.
3. "The Blessed Virgin Mary continues to precede the people of God. Her exceptional pilgrimage in/of faith represents a constant point of reference for the Church, for individuals and for communities, for peoples and nations and, in a certain sense, for the whole of/entire/all humanity" (RM, 6). She is the star of the third millennium, just as at the beginning of the Christian era she was the dawn that preceded Jesus on the horizon of history. Mary, in fact, was born chronologically before Christ and generated and inserted him into our human events.
We turn to her so that she may continue to guide/guiding us towards Christ and the Father, even in the dark night of evil, and in moments of doubt, crisis, silence and suffering. To her we raise the song/chant that the Eastern Church loves more than any other, that/the Akathistos Hymn which in 24 stanzas lyrically exalts her figure. In the fifth stanza dedicated to the/her visit to Elizabeth, it exclaims:
"Rejoice, branch of an indescribable plant. Rejoice, possession of whole fruit. Rejoice, you who cultivate the cultivator friend of men. Rejoice, parent of the creator of our life./
Hail, O Tendril whose Bud shall not wilt; hail, O Soil whose Fruit shall not perish!
Hail, O Tender of mankind's loving Tender; hail, O Gardener of the Gardener of Life!
Rejoice, earth/ground who/that yields fruitfulness of compassion. Rejoice, table full-laden with mercy. Rejoice, because you make bloom a meadow of delights bloom. Rejoice, for you have prepared a haven for souls.
Rejoice, welcome incense of supplications. Rejoice, forgiveness of the whole world. Rejoice, God's benevolence towards mortals. Rejoice, bold word or mortals to God.
Rejoice, Virgin Spouse!"
4. The visit to Elizabeth is sealed by the canticle of the Magnificat, a hymn that traverses all the Christian centuries like a perennial melody: a hymn which/that unites the souls of Christ's disciples beyond the historical divisions, which we are committed to overcoming in view of a full communion. In this ecumenical climate, it is beautiful/good to remember that Martin Luther in 1521 dedicated a famous commentary to this "holy canticle of the blessed Mother of God" - as he himself expressed it. In it he affirms that the hymn "must be learned well and remembered by everyone", because "in the Magnificat Mary teaches us how we must love and praise God... She wants to be the greatest example of God's grace in order to spur everyone to have trust and to praise divine grace" (M. Luther, Scritti religiosi, edited by V. Vinay, Turin 1967, pp. 431-512).
Mary celebrates the primacy of God and his grace, God who chooses the least and the despised, the "poor of the Lord" spoken of in the Old Testament; she reverses their destiny and introduces them as the protagonists of salvation history.
5. From the moment when God looked on her with love, Mary became a sign of hope for the multitude of the poor, the earth's least ones who become the first in the kingdom of God. She faithfully followed the choice of Christ, her Son, who repeats to all of history's afflicted: "Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Mt 11: 28). The Church follows Mary and the Lord Jesus, walking on the tortuous roads of history, to lift up, promote and esteem the immense line of poor, hungry, humiliated and offended men and women (cf. Lk 1: 52-53). The humble Virgin of Nazareth, as St Ambrose observes, is not "the God of the temple, but the temple of God" (De Spiritu Sancto, III 11, 80). As such she guides all who turn to her to the encounter with God the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit."
After the Catechesis, Papa Giovanni Paolo II greeted the pilgrims in various languages:
I am happy to extend a special greeting today to the members of the World Union of Catholic Women’s Organizations meeting in Rome for their General Assembly. You have come together to grow in a deeper understanding of your mission and to support one another as you seek to live out your commitment to Christian holiness, to feminine holiness. This form of discipleship is indispensable to the Church in the Third Millennium. Women, in fact, are uniquely gifted in the task of passing on the Christian message in the family and in the world of work, study and leisure. Catholic women who live by faith, hope and love, and who honour God’s name in prayer and service, have always played a central role in transmitting the genuine sense of Christian faith and in applying it to every circumstance of life. Grateful for your loving commitment to Christ and his saving word, I urge you to look ever more confidently to Mary of Nazareth, so that your prophetic mission will bring forth ever greater fruits of Christian life and service.
Upon all the English-speaking visitors present at today’s Audience, especially those from Denmark, Sweden and the United States of America, I cordially invoke the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Questa forma di discepolato è indispensabile per la Chiesa nel Terzo Millennio. Le donne, infatti, hanno una dono unico nel compito di trasmettere il messaggio cristiano in famiglia e nel mondo del lavoro, dello studio e del tempo libero. Le donne cattoliche che vivono nella fede, nella speranza e nella carità, e che onorano il nome di Dio nella preghiera e nel servizio, hanno sempre svolto un ruolo centrale nel trasmettere il senso autentico della fede cristiana e nell'applicarlo ad ogni circostanza della vita. Rivolgo un cordiale benvenuto a tutti i pellegrini di lingua italiana. In particolare, saluto i vigili urbani di Trento che, accompagnati dall'Arcivescovo Mons. Luigi Bressan e dal Sindaco della Città, sono venuti in pellegrinaggio a Roma, in occasione del bicentenario della costituzione del Corpo di Polizia Municipale di Trento. Formulo fervidi voti che questa ricorrenza sia per tutti uno stimolo a rinsaldare un più generoso impegno di servizio alla cittadinanza, ispirandosi ai perenni valori cristiani.
Saluto, poi, l'Associazione Cristiana Artigiani Italiani, l'Associazione sportiva Lodigiani Calcio, e gli Allievi Ufficiali della Scuola di Sanità e Veterinaria Militare della Cecchignola in Roma.

APPELLO DEL SANTO PADRE
Giornata Internazionale contro la discriminazione razziale
Ricorre oggi, 21 marzo, la Giornata internazionale delle Nazioni Unite per l'eliminazione della discriminazione razziale. Essa segna anche l'inizio della settimana di solidarietà con quanti lottano contro tale ingiustizia.
Gli Strumenti internazionali adottati, le Conferenze Mondiali e, in particolare, la prossima che si svolgerà a Durban (Sud Africa) nel mese di settembre del corrente anno, costituiscono tappe importanti nel cammino per l'affermazione della fondamentale uguaglianza e dignità di ogni persona e per una pacifica convivenza fra tutti i popoli. Malgrado questi sforzi, milioni di esseri umani non vedono ancora riconosciuto il loro "diritto di cittadinanza" in seno alla famiglia umana.
La Chiesa si unisce all'impegno di quanti difendono i diritti umani e si sente solidale con tutti coloro che per motivi razziali, etnici, religiosi e sociali sono vittime di discriminazione. I valori spirituali e religiosi, con il loro potenziale di rinnovamento, contribuiscono efficacemente a migliorare la società. Alla lodevole azione dei Governi e delle Organizzazioni internazionali in questo campo è doveroso che si unisca anche quella delle comunità religiose.
Desidero pertanto ripetere che nella Chiesa nessuno è straniero e tutti devono sentirsi a casa loro! Fare della Chiesa "la casa e la scuola della comunione" è una risposta concreta alle attese di giustizia del mondo di oggi.
